Two students of mine—Adriana and Vincent, recently participated in the Steinway & Sons Malaysian Youth Piano Competition 2011-2012. I received some good news today that they have made it through the audition stage. Now it’s onward to the semi-finals where these 10 shortlisted contestants will battle it out for the finals in Kuala Lumpur on March 22, 2012. Five will be chosen from this stage and then the first prize winner will go to Singapore to compete in the Regional Finals. If they make it through that they will then go to Hamburg, Germany to compete in the Grand Finals.

Congratulations, Adriana and Vincent. Now I’m going to roll up my shirt sleeves and work you two—stay focused and on course!

    Hi Mr Yeoh, what is the best age for a kid to start on piano lesson?

      Hi Grace, the current trend seems to be the younger the better. I disagree. I’d rather wait for a child to turn 5 or 6 before starting piano lessons.

        Thanks for your reply! My daughter is 5 this year and I have planned to let her start piano lesson at age of 6, do you have a slot for her Mr Yeoh? ^ ^

          Yes, I am in Penang. We stay in Bayswater. When do you think she should start the lesson? She’s officially turning 5 in another 3 weeks time.

          Hmm…I’m based in Tanjung Tokong (near Gurney Plaza). Has your daughter displayed any affinity towards music?

    She expresses interest in her keyboard lessons, but someone told me, if I start her too early, the burnout rate is high cuz young kids do not understand the concept of practicing. I just hope that lessons nurture her love for piano in long term. What do you think Philip?

    Wat about having a trial lesson with her, does it give you a better idea on when to start her piano lesson?
