My blog turns One

It is a wet Thursday morning as I write this. After 193 posts, 424 comments and a readership hit of almost 10,000 my blog has arrived at its first milestone. I’m quite surprised myself (don’t snigger) since I’m not a diary sort of person. I remember when I was young my dad would give me a diary without fail at the end of each year. I’d be very enthusiastic writing down the January entries. Then entries for February would be less, March even more so, and by the time April arrived my diary was practically devoid of content. Nonetheless, I started this blog last April without any expectations; the main thing different is that this is read by readers all over the world, who are free to comment on my musings (which makes it more enjoyable and exciting for me)

Of course the neat thing about having my own blog is that I can write about anything that I want, though I steer clear of religion and politics. I believe my ebook (see the sidebar) has received much exposure here, and hopefully that will help its sales along. I’ve even extended an invitation to a close friend to guest-write here (she’s still thinking about it, you know who you are, K) And last but not least, a big thank you to the folks at WordPress.org for giving me this vehicle to ride (write?) on, and for free, to boot. Thanks to Windows Live Writer too, an excellent tool for writing my posts and drafts before publishing.

Finally, a big THANK YOU to all you guys and girls out there in cyberspace who have visited and read my blog. I hope you’ll keep coming, and please feel free to drop me a line—it can be quite lonely when I’m writing by myself. Have a good day.

Bug Hunt

The story so far: yesterday was exasperating, because things remained the same—I couldn’t get my custom widgets (like Feedjit and Alexa) to display in themes other than Tarski. I was so desperate that I foolishly “reinstalled” WordPress 2.7 (I made backups first). No luck, the problem still lingered. Until I came upon this page in the WordPress.com forums (big thank yous to the members who posted there). Turns out that it could have been a bug in the latest release of WordPress.com (I was told it was fixed) and I had the suspicion that it was present in WordPress.org too.

Anyway, this is how I solved it:

  1. I activated the Tarski theme, and went to the widgets page.
  2. I deleted all my custom widgets. I copied the codes to Notepad before deleting them.
  3. Once this was done, the deleted widgets appeared on the left-hand side, with a clickable add link. This meant that I could add them to other themes. I tried it out and it worked. Success at last!

This had me a little perplexed; I’d used Tarski before in WP versions prior to 2.7 without any problems. Or could it have been the latest version of Tarski (2.4) conflicting with WP? Whatever it is, I will be a little more careful whenever I play around with themes; I was fortunate that I was able to solve this problem.

Welcome back, Quentin

I’ve always been partial to Quentin, a WordPress.com theme I used in the past. When I moved on to WordPress.org I couldn’t for the life of me find Quentin in the Themes directory. Until now. Turns out that the author, Mike Purdy, stopped development of the theme sometime back. But I’m glad that A Reasonable Man has updated it. Thanks. Now I can enjoy one of my favorite themes again, and it seems to work well with WordPress 2.6. To me, it has a nice, old-style look and feel to it.

Working on my new website

AG00011_Yes sir, these past few weeks have been exhilarating, to say the least. I’ve been working on my new website  ever since I signed up for Lunarpages’ web hosting (read my Moving House posts) in June. I’d like to say a big thank you to Doris for always offering a helping hand to me. Without her guidance and expertise, I’d probably have thrown in the towel early on and lost my sanity in the process.

As I’ve mentioned in a previous post, the Lunarpages website builder Pagemason is still in Beta and lacking a lot of flexibility. I am so glad I found Kompozer, which, although isn’t even version 1 yet, is surprisingly stable and easy to use (take that from a guy who’s still butting heads with HTML and CSS).

Doing that web stuff and taking care of my WordPress blog has consumed a lot of time, but all will be revealed when I launch my website shortly, around early August or so. Of course I will announce it here. Keep your eyes peeled!

Settling into my new home

Well this WordPress.org thing is certainly different from my old and free WordPress.com. For one thing, much of everything is customizable. That has its pros and cons, but a big hurdle for me was, where to start? I missed the Blog Stats from my old blog, you know, the counter on the first page which tells you and me how many people have visited my blog. I found that this was not among the list of widgets available in the theme or themes I had selected. What to do? I managed to install a Blog Stats plug-in from WP’s plug-in directory, but that only shows up when I access my dashboard. And so far it hasn’t even updated yet: it’s showing that no one has visited my new blog home. This can’t be true! Disappointed

So yeah, it’ll take me a while to get used to this new place.

This is my blog’s new home!

Well, after a lot of hair-splitting and headaches, I’ve finally managed to migrate my old WordPress.com blog to this new space in my new website. I would really like to say a big thank you to Doris for all her help and encouragement :D

Of course it’ll take some time to really get things working 100% but rest assured I’ll be doing a lot of renovations here.

Time to get started. Please comment, I’ll save the housewarming for later.

Moving house, Part 5

Today, I’ve actually done it. Signed up for a 2-year webhosting account with Lunarpages. Now this is the time where all the work begins. Nevertheless, I’m going to take it one step at a time, setting up my own website, importing my WordPress blog, etc.

I’ll keep you posted.
