The E & O Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony 2011

E & O Christmas Tree 003

Another tumultuous year has zipped by and before I knew it Mazeta was asking me to accompany the E & O Nightingales for the annual Christmas Tree lighting ceremony on December 1. Of course there were a few changes—we have a new boss, signor Marco Battistotti (who gave a rousing welcoming speech), we had the Chief Minister of Penang pay a surprise visit and he also gave a brief speech. The Nightingales had different personnel from last year, and the guests adjourned to the new Sarkies in the new Victory Annex after the choir thingy was over. I would like to thank Mrs. Fong for kindly loaning me a Yamaha PSR-E423 keyboard, because I can guarantee you one thing never changes as far as this event is concerned—the cacophony produced by the guests reaches stratospheric levels. It’s all in good fun and this event does herald the beginning of the festive season for the hotel. I lugged along my Canon 550D and Speedlite 580EX II to take some pictures. The first picture above is of the glorious Christmas tree on the morning of December 1. I shot this using bounce flash from the 580EX II and again words fail me—I love my 580EX II.

(Below) Here I am, posing with my Yamaha. I’m a wee bit underexposed because Eugene (the photographer) doesn’t know how to use AE-Lock on my Canon. He’s a Lumix guy, duh!

(Photos below) As usual I snuck into the Bombay Shop before the choir sang and took some pictures of the beautiful items on sale. Setting the 580EX II to bounce flash gives all these pictures a soft, natural look.

(Above) This year’s choir was splendid—they belted their hearts out and had a good time. A guy with an EOS 60D was present so I asked him to take some pictures of us. Fill-in flash saves the day, otherwise our faces would be in shadow.

(Below) Another picture of some choir members and myself. We were in a more relaxed mood now that the ceremony was over, ha ha.

(Photos below) No lack of beautiful women either, heh heh. The shot immediately below was taken with the ever-beautiful Beatrice (aka Mrs. Saxon. Mike, don’t come after me) and the following shot was taken with the lovely Marilyn and Mazeta.

After the event was over the choir members and myself adjourned to a restaurant for some dinner. It was fun and here’s looking forward to the next December 1!

A trip to Straits Quay

I had an afternoon to kill, so decided to head for the newly-opened Straits Quay mall here. Armed with my Canon PowerShot SX130 IS I proceeded to take some shots. Here’s the gigantic Christmas tree located in front of the main entrance.

And here I am, looking rather small in front of it.

006

I walked around, and was hankering for some java. Fortunately there was a Secret Recipe café there, so in I went, and ordered a mocha coffee together with a delicious chocolate and banana cake. The portion was big and yummy. I used the SX130 IS in macro mode and the picture was razor sharp, as you can see.

At least they have a Subway there. I know where to go for a decent sandwich!

There are two levels of stores but only about a third of them were open. I guess it’ll be a couple of months before the other stores are ready. It does look like a nice place to go for a walk or window shop, though. And it’s only ten minutes from where I live, so there.

The E & O Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony 2010

It’s that time of year again where all mayhem breaks loose in the foyer of the E & O Hotel. It was like a zoo and circus combined and I swear that good-natured crowd could have drowned out Led Zeppelin easily. Anyways yours truly was again at the keyboard, this time it was a Yamaha Piaggero NP-V80 and I’d like to thank Mrs. Fong (Yamaha school administrator) for graciously loaning it to me for the evening. It’s a really nice instrument with 76 keys, packed with good sounds, and only weighs 15 lbs.! All pictures were taken with my Canon PowerShot SX130 IS.

There was a whole new group of singers this year and they performed well; they sang their hearts out and the crowd appreciated it. Kudos, guys and girls!

We had the usual countdown to the lighting of the Christmas Tree done by our outgoing general manager, Mr. Mike Saxon. I handheld this shot so there’s some slight blurring.

015

Before that event took place, I sought some solace at the Bombay Shop near the foyer. It was all decked out with Christmas stuff. Here are two shots.

This little girl was playing there and I couldn’t resist taking a shot. She’s actually Mike’s youngest daughter, Jessica. She’s cute, isn’t she?

It was good fun, but I’m glad it’s over with because I’m tired. Till the next post, this is Philip, signing out.

The E & O Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony 2009

It’s that time of year once more and yours truly was again at the helm of the piano to accompany the E & O Nightingales singing Christmas carols  for the lighting of the Christmas Tree at the hotel lobby. By the way, December here started out not with snow, but with an enormous thunderstorm just before the event started. Here’s one of my pictures.

The Christmas Tree at the E & O Hotel lobby

Here’s my piano and keyboard setup, a Korg PA-50 on top of the piano. I used the Korg most of the time, because the noise levels were extremely high and the piano couldn’t be heard.

General Manager Michael Saxon (my boss) gave his opening speech, and then Miss Mazeta conducted the E & O Nightingales for the singing of the Christmas carols. Yes, the choir was comprised of only ladies this year, but they sang their hearts out and I was very proud to have accompanied them. And word is that they will be doing some occasional caroling in the hotel between now and Christmas.

Up and coming violinist Koay Zhi Tong captivated and impressed the audience with two Christmas carols played on her electric violin. Zhi Tong was also a finalist in this year’s Piano Idol. This young lady’s one to watch!

And finally just when I was finishing my dinner, the E & O Nightingales came by for theirs, so the end result was me (the thorn huh) taking a photo with them. Well done, ladies!

The E & O Christmas Tree Lighting Event

This takes place annually on December 1st. The lobby at the E & O (Eastern and Oriental) Hotel here has one of the loveliest Christmas trees, ever. And I’ve been backing up the hotel choir for the past five years, so it’s always an event to look forward to. Of course, there are lots of guests (see picture), appetizers and drink flow merrily (to get them in the mood), and the hotel General Manager Mike Saxon gives a short message wishing all those present a Merry Christmas before the lights on the Christmas tree are switched on (hence the Lighting ceremony).

The guests listening to the General Manager's speech, prior to the turning on of the Christmas tree lights

This year, under the able guidance of Mr. Khoo Boo Lin and also a new “teacher,” aka Miss Mazeta, the choir belted out a string of Christmas carols, and had the crowd singing along. Yes, it’s always a noisy and boisterous affair, but that’s where the fun and Christmas spirit begin, right?

Rehearsal began at around 3:15 PM, and we didn’t really get done until 4:30 PM. I was ready to crash, and fortunately had one of the Georgetown suites to do this in, thanks to my friend and boss, Mike. Expect to pay about $184 USD for this suite per night. It’s fully air-conditioned with lovely wooden flooring. Anyways, I reported back to the lobby at 6 PM, set up my keyboard, and played some Christmas carols to get the crowd into the festive mood. An hour later the General Manager Mike Saxon gave his short but eloquent speech, and then the Christmas tree lights were turned on. The hotel choir sang a medley of carols, and the whole ceremony ended around 8 PM.

Hours later, here I am, at my computer. Finished downloading the pictures, typing the text, and here’s the post for all to see. Hope you enjoy reading it. Season’s Greetings to everybody.
