Be still my beating heart

The smell of fresh yellow lilies lingering deliciously in my suite has remained with me until today, even though the flowers themselves have faded and wilted. They were a gift from a student of mine and it was one of the loveliest birthday presents I have ever received. Flowers are such a marvelous creation—so lovely to see, to touch, to smell. There were moments during my stay when I just set and watched them—lots better than watching the idiot box. They remind me of people whom I consider fortunate to call friend. I am filled with joy to see them, to talk with them, and to touch them. Yet, when they are silent—like flowers they still radiate their own warmth and kindness. We can see and appreciate the beauty in this world only when we still our hearts—by doing this we filter out all the incessant noise that clogs our thinking minds during most of our waking moments. We are so caught up with work, schedules, meetings, emails, blah blah blah—the only time when we begin to appreciate all this natural beauty is when we are lying incapacitated in bed, breathing our last breaths.

E & O 014

I am thankful for life—and the abundance of it. Not the material things (although we need them) but the things that are just present. Each morning when I wake up and open my sleepy eyes I marvel at seeing things around my room, thanking God and the universe for the sense of sight. Thanking my ophthalmologist for his exceptional skills in operating on my cataracts. Being so grateful that I can still move my ten fingers and toes (I need the former to play the piano). The sense of touch as my feet establish contact with the floor—and on and on. Blessings are all around us if we would only stop to look and wonder in amazement and gratitude.

I have learnt so much about this glorious present or Now after reading Eckhart Tolle’s The Power of Now, A New Earth, and Stillness Speaks. I was really too caught up with the problems and the noise of this world until the essence of these books became etched in my mind. I can’t quite remember but one day I just decided to order them—and I haven’t regretted it. Of course they are books on spiritual enlightenment. Of course they demand that you read them through very carefully and slowly (like learning to play the piano well and not just being a kitten or monkey on the keys) The nice thing about Tolle’s books is that while they are spiritual, they are certainly not religious. Tolle quotes from the parables of Jesus, Buddha, Rumi, Zen masters, etc. but these are all interwoven with precise care into his writings. I would recommend starting out with The Power of Now first, before reading A New Earth. Stillness Speaks is comprised of very short chapters and is simply great for refreshing the soul. I’m not kidding.

Nowadays, I wake up and thank God and the universe for another wonderful day. I tell the universe, “I expect great things to come my way!” Don’t get me wrong, I’m not asking for a windfall in the lottery or stuff like that. Just remember this—blessings come in so many shapes and forms. It could be the smile from a friend, or even a stranger. A check in the mail (thank you, PayPal, for giving me a full refund…yay!) Driving through a whole row of green lights. Finding the perfect parking spot. Reaching home just as the heavens start to pour. Getting a Facebook compliment. Opening the door for someone. Listening to your favorite song. Saying thank you. Getting a cheery text message from someone you love. Etcetera, etcetera.

We all need to take time to recharge, to rejuvenate. Going for a vacation is good (my birthday vacation was superb) but even spending 15 minutes in silence at home (turn off that darn TV) or walking in the garden, contemplating and admiring nature, listening to birds singing, the sound of raindrops falling on your head (ah, Burt Bacharach). Be still—and take in the good things the universe is wanting and waiting to give you.

People…people who need people, are the luckiest people in the world. ~ Barbra Streisand

The E & O Hotel has been part of my life for a very long time. Albert (my late father) tinkled the ivories there for well over 40 years and when I was a kid and growing up he would bring me there occasionally to expose me to this unique establishment. Those were the days, my friend. Lavish weddings, big band music, people dressed to the hilt in their finest…I feel a touch of nostalgia coming into me as I write this. It’s as if my dad’s music still lives on, and I sometimes feel unworthy to carry on his legacy because I am nowhere near what he has achieved and given to the hotel. Of course a lot has changed with the passing of time. However, there is one thing that hasn’t changed—I believe it truly, and that is—the people here.

My dad regarded the E & O as his second home and I do too. Even though I’m only on during Friday and Saturday evenings, I look forward to going to this Grand Old Dame and meeting up with the wonderful people there. We talk, we laugh, we have lots of fun…isn’t that the way to treat other human beings? Kindness given is returned tenfold…look at the way I was treated when I spent my recent birthday there. Uh oh, gotta stop the tears now.

I would also like to thank my present boss, Signor Marco Battistotti (mio amico), for allowing me the honor to be a part of the big E & O family. He and Michael Saxon (my previous boss) have made me feel so glad and proud that I’m able to continue my father’s legacy there.

Big thank you’s to Lynn, Huey Yee, Yee Mei, Adila, Eugene, Ijoy, Bob, Faiz, Rizal, Lokesh, Adeline, Loong, Zul, Nesh, Kelly, Chew Kee Hao, Rose, Roslin, Laila, Marlin, Harris, Chris, Shafinie, Amisha, Normala, Camila, Noor, Mr. Rama, Kusairy, Kamal, Salim, Mazlan, Dephany, Charmaine, Wendy, Ireese, Mazeta and others too many to mention. I love you all!! Waaaaaaah.

I could tell my birthday dinner would be great, and I was right. I arrived at the 1885 all dressed up and was shown to my table which had been painstakingly set up by Ijoy, Bob, and the rest of the staff. Sigh, wish I had a date.

E & O 090

I started off with some French sounding appetizer, together with some bread.

E & O 091

In between the courses I decided to tinkle the piano, to the delight of the guests. I talked with a pair of them and hearing that it was my birthday, they offered to buy me a double Baileys! Here’s the exquisite Caesar salad.

E & O 102

And now—the end is near, LOL. Just kidding—the Australian tenderloin steak was perfection—all 180g of it, muah! I polished off everything on the plate.

E & O 105

Well I was really stuffing myself and getting stuffed. However, I just had to have the crepe suzette—my favorite dessert. This time it was prepared with Grand Marnier, served with vanilla ice cream.

E & O 106

Coupled with the different wines for appetizer, main course, and dessert I thought I had made it. But I forgot that the staff of 1885 treat me like part of the family. They wouldn’t let me go without partaking of a birthday cake and the birthday song! Thank goodness it wasn’t another chocolate cake (which I had already consumed earlier on the same afternoon) This time it was cheesecake and it was lovely, mmmhmmm.

E & O 113

What was particularly touching was that everyone—Ijoy, Bob and Rizal in particular, made me feel so much at home at the 1885. I wouldn’t call it my workplace, but it’s a place I go to because I enjoy playing the piano and making the guests as well as the staff happy. I am very grateful to everyone for treating me like family there. Big thank you’s and love to Mei, Adila, Ijoy, Bob, Eugene, Rizal, Faiz, Lokesh and the chefs at 1885 for making my birthday so memorable.

September 26 arrived with lots of rain—I didn’t mind, though. It was nice to hear all the natural sounds of rain as well as a rough sea (the hotel overlooks the Andaman Sea) I should add that I never turned on the two television sets even once, nope. I prefer the silence and stillness which makes it more peaceful for me. I had a bunch of emails and Facebook birthday greetings pouring in throughout the day—it was fun to just watch my mail box tinkling away. I had a nice shower in the luxurious bathroom which had everything—plush white cotton towels in all sizes, two bathrobes, slippers…you name it, it’s there.

After getting all spruced up, down I went to Sarkies Corner for the buffet breakfast (which is complimentary for in-house guests) As usual I pigged out—burp!

After this huge breakfast, I took a walk and then went back to my suite for some R&R and to catch up on the Facebook greetings and emails. There was a wonderful smell of flowers in my room and, wow! A floral and fruit basket had been delivered to me by my student, Sabrina. Thank you, dear.

E & O 016

I skipped lunch but I was invited to afternoon tea by the lovely staff at 1885 so off I went, and had some good strong coffee and some delicious pastries. Yummy!!

E & O 027

After this I returned to my room to have a little siesta on the couch. I know I know, it’s my birthday, isn’t it? I’m allowed to do this! Later on, there was this knock knock on my door. I opened it, and these lovely ladies came in singing the birthday song and bringing me some luscious chocolate cake.

E & O 081

Seated L-R are Adeline, myself, and Huey Yee. Lynn is standing behind. I did the cake cutting and made a wish. I’d like to thank Zul for taking some amazing pictures with my Canon EOS 550D.

E & O 085

Gosh, it seems as if I’ve been eating the whole day! Later in the evening I got ready to go to the 1885 for my birthday dinner, but that will be in Part 3. See you there.

I’ve been celebrating my birthday at the E & O for the past two years and this year wasn’t going to be any different—apart from the fact that I decided to go for two nights instead of one at the Grand Old Dame. On the eve of my birthday I checked in at the front desk—this time I wouldn’t be in Room 303 but 227; I was told the latter had a king-sized bed instead of two singles so I was looking forward to it. Needless to say I wasn’t disappointed. It was luxurious to just lay my tired body on this bed, and look at all the pillows! Two Canon speedlites were used in wireless mode to achieve this natural lighting—my Speedlite 580EX II was bounced on camera while my Speedlite 320EX was placed on top of the bed’s translucent ceiling, enabling its light to filter through.

(Below) Here I am, sitting on the very plush and comfortable couch in the living room area. I took quite a few naps on it!

Later in the evening I took my mom out for dinner and then I returned to the hotel. It was a very laidback night; I’m so glad that the suites have wireless broadband, I can use my laptop anywhere without being tied down by a cable. It didn’t take me long to doze into dreamland once my head hit those soft yet firm pillows.

Finding serenity

This is actually a birthday post, but I’m going to start off with something serious. I’ve gone through a period of depression for the past six months, and there were times when my whole world was caving in. I was fortunate that I had friends who gave me support and encouragement (and for those of you who are unaware, you can’t just snap out of depression…it’s not the blues) I’ve also sought medical advice from my doc and he prescribed an antidepressant for me which helped a lot. I’m glad to say that for now I’m out of the woods; the dark clouds have parted and I am…happy.

I’m happy because at the ripe old age of 50 I’ve decided to let go of the crap in my life and to move on. I’m not pursuing happiness per se, just freeing myself and jettisoning all the resentment, bitterness, hatred, anger…call it what you will. I’m just moving on. I might be 50 but God willing I’ll still have a few more decades to live. And I aim to get along with it. I’ve changed what I can and I’m letting the rest go. For the better.

Now on with the good stuff. My birthday was just wonderful. Woke up on the Sunday, had some breakfast, and then started mopping the floors, LOL (the fun comes after some hard work, right?) Then took my mom out for a quick lunch at one of the Indian restaurants. After that I raced over to the local Yamaha center to judge the Electone (Organ) Idol competition. Let me tell you, the contestants in this competition were superb. So much creativity and talent made judging this a joy and the time passed quickly; we had a one-minute break and Mrs. Fong announced it was my birthday (blush) and Sue and her son Vincent marched in with a birthday cake for me, awww! To top it off, Mrs. Fong had one for me too. Thank you so much!

After the competition finished, I headed for the E & O Hotel around 3:30 in the afternoon. Ah, the grand old dame. It was the same date last year that I first stayed here and Mike, my boss, was kind enough to let history repeat itself. And to be in my favorite suite again, #303!! I barely had time to settle in and dump my stuff and then I heard the door bell. What do you know, here comes the Front Office staff with yet another birthday cake!! Am I lucky or what?

One birthday cake from the hotel

Now look at this. Which one should I choose, LOL!!

Make that THREE birthday cakes!

The Front Office staff sang Happy Birthday to me at the top of their voices and I was so touched. They treated me like a VIP. No, make that as a friend and I really am privileged to know all these fine people. Here are some more pictures we took.

Chew, Lynn, Myself, Huey Yee, Pei Ling and Mr. Cheah

I’d like to thank Chew, Lynn, Huey Yee, Pei Ling, Adam, and most of all my best buddy Mr. Cheah (yeah, YOU) who treated me like I was a VIP (Very Important Pianist!) And here’s one of the men. Of course I’m the godfather.

Chew, myself, Adam and Mr. Cheah

Okies, time to get ready to “work.” The staff at the 1885 fine dining restaurant got wind that it was my special day so while I was chilling in my suite during a break, I returned to find this!

This was a lovely surprise!

One of the staff, Mr. Ijoy told me to sit down and gave me a glass of wine (!) There was also going to be crepe suzette for me (yummy, I love it) Wheeeeee!!

I drank it all, hic!

Here’s Ijoy doing what he does best. The crepe suzette was delightful!

Ijoy preparing the crepe suzette for me

Yummmmmmmmy!!

The 1885 staff weren’t finished with me yet, lol. They presented me with one of my birthday cakes and sang the birthday song for me (fortunately the last guest had left) I was very moved. I shared the cake with all of them. They were truly wonderful.

Thank you, Sue and family!

The next morning I went for the breakfast buffet at Sarkies Corner. It was magic as usual. Here are some tantalizing pictures. Needless to say I was a real piglet.

Starting off with some juicy fruits, yogurt, and coffee

Followed by some tasty pastries and cereal

After this I surrendered

All too soon it was time to check out. I’d like to thank everybody for making my day so special. Thanks to all my Facebook friends who posted birthday greetings for me. And thanks, Mike, for another lovely stay at the grand old dame.

G: Gratitude, Gifts

“Gratefulness is the key to a happy life that we hold in our hands, because if we are not grateful, then no matter how much we have we will not be happy—because we will always want to have something else or something more.” Brother David Steindl-Rast

“Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all the others.” Cicero

“To speak gratitude is courteous and pleasant, to enact gratitude is generous and noble, but to live gratitude is to touch Heaven.” Johannes A. Gaertner

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, confusion into clarity…. It turns problems into gifts, failures into success, the unexpected into perfect timing, and mistakes into important events. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow.” Melodie Beattie

“If the only prayer you said in your whole life was "thank you," that would suffice.” Meister Eckhart

Because of my Christian upbringing I was always taught to be thankful for all the things that God has bestowed upon us. I am glad for this, because I have found out that when the storms of life hit you at full force, gratitude might not be the first thing you think about, but trust me, it’s an absolute life-saver. Being thankful has helped me sail through those turbulent waters that come my way…and I am stronger because of it.

Yes, no doubt it’s hard to be grateful in this materialistic world that we live in—always wishing I had a bigger car, a bigger house, a nicer stereo, a newer Yamaha Clavinova (hee hee), more money, etc. I’ve learnt my lesson—not to give in to this, because God gives us just what is enough…and then some. Blessings are not tied only to material and worldly things. I am thankful for my health (especially my eyes!), my family and relatives, my friends, etc. I wake up each day and I say a humble thank you to the Lord for another day. I go to bed every night and I say the same thing again. A thankful heart is a happy heart.

I will always remember and treasure this little nugget of wisdom someone told me when I was a young boy: “I used to complain that I didn’t have any shoes to wear, until I saw a person who had no feet.”

This video called The Miniature Earth always has me choked up. Watch it, and be thankful, my fellow readers. God bless you all.

“Everyone is gifted—but some people never open their package.” Unknown

For me my gift is music, particularly playing the piano. The best part I feel, is when I share this gift out with others. Whether it’s teaching the piano to students, or playing the piano at the hotel…’tis a joy. And there are also many other gifts that we all have…the gifts of kindness, gratitude, and compassion, to name a few. These gifts reside inside us—it’s up to each one of us to decide whether to allow them to come out from within our souls.

I’m also not going to deny not liking physical gifts. After all, I gave myself a birthday present not too long ago. However, the most wonderful gifts don’t require money to buy, and that’s why they are so special—a gift of friendship, a gift of love, a gift of caring…ah, it just warms my heart!
