Ah, a little bird tells me some parents thought that the judges were “harsh” and “brutal” in their comments. Since I’m one of the judges, I thought I’d let parents and contestants air their views here in my blog. If you’d like to remain anonymous, just let me know when you comment and I’ll make it so.
So please start typing and let me know your views—thank you.

I took the judges’ sincere comments as a piece of good advice so that my kids can improve their piano skills. We’ve learned quite a bit from this event since it started last year and I hope there will be seasons 3,4,5,6… in the years to come. Cheers!
Ah, what an adorable little birdy. I wait and watch as I am very curious to see what the verdict on the judges will be. Maybe next time there will be no cheesecake and coffee.
Hi Philip,
As an observer, this is what I think…
It would be nice if the organisers would draw up the objective of the competition, the competition rules, required repertoire, etc. and circulate it to all teachers, parents and students. Not sure if you are aware, but there isn’t much publicity. Maybe the teachers were informed but as far as I know, not all parents are aware. In fact, we didn’t know about the event last year until they put up the audition notice. It’s been repeated this year as well except for the fact that more are aware of the repertoire requirements this time as it is the second time around.
I also believe that if the teachers are aware of the requirements, there wouldn’t be so many students with the wrong type of songs. I feel that it is a wasted effort for the students — not knowing what to expect.
Parents who have no knowledge in music depend completely on the music teachers.
Also, unlike Western countries, their kids perform a recital — ours only take exams — this is another thing the parents (teachers as well) aren’t very familiar with — the difference between a recital, exams and competition as mentioned in your blog. It would be nice if you could suggest to create more awareness among teachers, parents and students at Yamaha.
Consider this a feedback to your Piano Idol (judging) blog post but count me as anonymous since my kids are not the contestants.
Thanks.
