I have to admit it. Staying even for an hour or two in one of the suites of the E & O Hotel does spoil me. The Georgetown suite isn’t the largest, but it has a living area, a bedroom, and a bathroom. It’s actually like three rooms in one. Have a look at these photographs I snapped. Click on each pic to see a larger picture.
This picture shows the living area, which is the first room you see when opening your door. I love the wooden floors, and the furniture is exquisite. There’s an electric kettle for brewing coffee or tea (supplied) and to just sit in that sofa and put my legs up is bliss indeed.
The living room area going into the bedroom area. Two televisions are provided, one in each room.
The bedroom itself. Needless to say, anyone could easily fall asleep in such a luxurious bed! I should know, I had a very nice siesta in it.
And the last room is of course, the bathroom, which is pretty big. As you can see, there’s a shower stall, a long bath, two separate basins, plenty of mirrors, and everything you need to make yourself clean and spiffy is provided. Yes, you can spot my reflection (with the flash) in the mirror.
As quoted in Asia Explorers:
The idea to set up the hotel business came about in 1885 when the Sarkies brothers met the Khaw family in Bangkok, and was encouraged by them to set up a hotel in Penang. The Khaws built two separate hotels which the Sarkies managed. These were the Eastern Hotel, completed in 1884, and the Oriental Hotel, in 1885. It became immediately apparent that these two hotels should be combined, and hence the Eastern & Oriental Hotel was formed. In addition, the Sarkies also managed the Crag Hotel on Penang Hill. The merger of these two hotels created one of the finest hotel establishments in the region. It boasted of having the world’s longest sea-front lawn, which is 842 feet in length.
Famous personalities who have stayed in the E & O include Noel Coward, Douglas Fairbanks, Hermann Hesse, Rudyard Kipling and Somerset Maugham. You don’t need to be a star to stay though. Just get your AMEX or checkbook ready ![]()
Is that a pair of shorts I see in the reflection in the mirror?
That’s right, pr. My, what sharp eyes you have, LOL.
