It’s that time of year again

I’m talking about choir practice for Christmas. It comes just once a year but it seemed like a whole year just flew by since last year’s rehearsals. CP (Choir Practice) started last week, and we do it on Sundays and Thursdays. Mind you, I’m not in the choir (my singing would drive everybody nuts) but I’m the humble pianist. The church choir, under the able hands of Ivy Tan, has been singing for as long as I can remember. Ivy is great at choosing very unique arrangements of carols. This year we’re doing Hark The Herald Angels Sing, Silent Night, Angels From The Realms Of Glory, to name a few.

For me, the highlight would be the selections we’re doing from Handel’s Messiah, including the famous Hallelujah Chorus. Composed in 1741, Messiah is an oratorio (a sacred work for chorus and orchestra) based on a libretto by Charles Jennens. It received its premiere in Dublin, Ireland.

I was very fortunate to have attended a live performance of Messiah, performed by the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, in Davies Symphony Hall, San Francisco. I tell you, nothing beats a live performance of this work, especially the Hallelujah Chorus, where it has been customary for the audience to stand up for its duration. Glorious! Nowadays, I listen to Trevor Pinnock’s recording with The English Concert and Choir, available on DG’s Archiv label. Of course, there are numerous recordings of this very well-known work.

Come Christmas morning, I’ll be pounding the ivories accompanying the church choir. I’m sure it’ll be an exhilarating performance.

I’m back on WLM9

If you’ve read my previous posts about WLM9, you’d have gathered my love-hate relationship with this version, thanks to the infamous Error 80070057 message: “We were unable to sign you in because this email address could not be verified, blah blah blah.” I’d been signing on to WLM using a non-hotmail address for the past 3 years, without any trouble. Anyway, Doris told me to change my password and see whether that could cure the problem, so I followed that path first.

Signed into Windows Live (not WLM) with my old ID and password. Changed the password and then signed out from Windows Live. Waited a few minutes, uninstalled WLM8.5 (which I’d been using for the past fortnight after getting that 80070057 error), downloaded and installed a fresh copy of WLM9 (Build 14.0.5027.908). Waited for a moment, kept my fingers crossed, and signed in. Error 80070057 popped up again. ARGH!

OK, enough is enough. Since that stupid error did mention something about my email address, I suppose something had to have happened at the WLM server end; maybe some code went ballistic and proclaimed my email address as hostile, whatever. Back to my story: I decided to create a Hotmail address. Did so, and was advised to wait for an hour before signing in. Well you know me, I can’t even wait for 10 minutes. Gave it a minute or two and then signed in with my new Hotmail address. Voila! Instant success!

I guess this isn’t the perfect solution, but at least now I’m able to use WLM9. It’s just my sign-in ID that has changed. Hopefully I’ve blasted that SOB 80070057 error into oblivion.

Hey Microsoft, any comments??

America votes for Change

The New York Times Nov 5, 2008

The cover of the New York Times (November 5, 2008) says it all. Barack Obama is the 44th President of the United States. Congratulations to the American people for voting for change, and for electing the first black (or should I say half-black) President into office. I trust that President Obama will get right down to tackling the country’s economic crisis and that things will hopefully improve before long.

Piano Idol Chow Down

One thing I have to say about Fong and Swee Lin—they both really know how to take care of their staff. Yesterday, the Piano Idol crew, together with we three judges in tow, went to Tao Japanese restaurant in E-Gate for an early buffet dinner. I think there were about 20 of us. The food was abundant—there was everything: abalone, scallops, cod, salmon, eel (!), prawns, chicken, lamb, beef, sushi, salads—you name it, we ordered it. We washed it down with copious amounts of iced lemon tea, green tea, and a few other drinks. No, we didn’t indulge in any sake; we were all stone-cold sober. Dessert was black sesame ice cream (yummy) together with a side order of watermelon (the only fruit they had available yesterday).

The photo is courtesy of Ee Yin. It was snapped without flash, so I had to clean it up a bit. Yeah, that’s me, third from right, with part of the motley crew.

Once again, a big thank you to Fong and Swee Lin for giving us a delightful dinner, and enlarged pot-bellies.
