Working on my new website

AG00011_Yes sir, these past few weeks have been exhilarating, to say the least. I’ve been working on my new website  ever since I signed up for Lunarpages’ web hosting (read my Moving House posts) in June. I’d like to say a big thank you to Doris for always offering a helping hand to me. Without her guidance and expertise, I’d probably have thrown in the towel early on and lost my sanity in the process.

As I’ve mentioned in a previous post, the Lunarpages website builder Pagemason is still in Beta and lacking a lot of flexibility. I am so glad I found Kompozer, which, although isn’t even version 1 yet, is surprisingly stable and easy to use (take that from a guy who’s still butting heads with HTML and CSS).

Doing that web stuff and taking care of my WordPress blog has consumed a lot of time, but all will be revealed when I launch my website shortly, around early August or so. Of course I will announce it here. Keep your eyes peeled!

Spybot 1.6 Final is released

The final release of Spybot 1.6 is out. More details are available here at Spybot’s homepage, and you can download it here (the version number is 1.6.0.30). I’ve tested it on my system and it works fine, taking just over 8 minutes to scan my C: drive. Kudos to Patrick and the team!

If you’d like more info regarding spyware and all that stuff, head over to my friend Doris’ blog. She’s written a lot of good advice about clearing all that gunk from your hard drive. Well worth a visit.

Ever had trouble connecting to a website and wondering whether the problem is on your side or theirs? Well wonder no more, because thanks to my friend Doris (and her most burning question in the Universe) go to this site called down for everyone or just me. Type in the website URL you’re trying to connect to, hit Enter, and you’ll get your answer in seconds.

Thanks to Alex Payne, the guy behind this brilliant creation.

Wonderful and unique wallpapers here

I stumbled into Pete Joison’s Blurburger website while doing a search for wallpapers. His creations caught my eye because of their unique quirkiness and their bold and punchy colors. So much so that I just had to write it in a post here. I’ve never seen anything like it, and it really livens up my desktop. Furthermore, Pete has offered all of them as free downloads, thanks very much, Mate (he’s from Down Under, aka Australia).

Besides wallpapers, Pete’s site offers a blog, some great cartoons, Blurburger icons, and iPhone wallpapers. Check it out!

Spybot 1.6 rocks! Part 2

The latest version of Spybot 1.6 is Release Candidate 2, or RC2, which can be downloaded here. I’d suggest uninstalling any previous versions before installing this one, and also disable the TeaTimer feature. The scanning speed is a little slower than 1.6 Beta (see my previous Spybot post). Scanning my whole system with RC2 took 8 minutes vs 5 minutes with 1.6 Beta.

I’ve noticed this was due to the fact that Spybot took some time on virtumonde.dll and Zlob, two malicious spyware. Still, 8 minutes is pretty fast in my book.

WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get)

Oh, the pain of setting up website pages. After signing up with Lunarpages (which provides excellent service, by the way) I proceeded to use their website editor called Pagemason. However, it is still in Beta and you know what that means. Lots of bugs, so I didn’t enjoy using it. My good friend Doris then recommended CoffeeCup, another HTML editing program, but somehow or other, I managed to screw it up, lol. At this point I was getting very frustrated indeed (now I know how werewolves feel) and even downloaded a trial version of Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 as a last resort. Wrong move: what I saw before me was the Queen Mary of all HTML editors; Dreamweaver is arguably one of the best, but it would take my tired brain too long to learn all its mechanisms.

I was almost on the verge of giving up, but then decided to Google wysiwyg freeware just to see what would pop up. One of the top-ranking hits mentioned a freeware program called KompoZer. Never heard of it before, but went to its website, and decided to give it a shot. Well what do you know, this program followed exactly what I typed in, and as of now, hasn’t screwed up my HTML stuff. Yay! Kudos to the KompoZer team!
