Desktop vs Laptop

Prices of laptops have plunged dramatically here in Malaysia. So much so that many people are opting for laptops rather than desktops. And who can blame them? Compared to desktops, laptops are

  • portable
  • cheap
  • just as powerful as desktops
  • space-saving
  • hip/trendy/sexy/stylish, you name it

But give me a desktop anytime. Maybe that’s my geekiness showing, but I just love an actual keyboard and mouse, plus the robustness of a desktop. It’s also easy to update or replace components. With laptops, if the screen or keyboard decides to go South (and your warranty period has expired), you’re in trouble.

But there, I’ve said my case.

  1. Laptop hard disks tend to be slower, I don’t really like that. I’ve been considering going desktop-less though, due to how much I travel.

  2. Thanks for the comment. That’s interesting, I hadn’t thought of laptop hard disks running slower.

  3. ..and I’m one of those people :-)

I have a desktop though upstairs. I rarely use it, but it is there if I need it and my backup if things should ever go “south”. Mind you, as you know, I’m a Mac geek and my desktop is an iMac. That has laptop components inside it.

My laptop is just as powerful as my desktop. The only thing I dislike is that batteries become awful over time periods, whether you use them or not. You just cannot get over that. I’m hoping the battery lasts long though and re-calibrate it often.

  4. For me, there will probably come a time where laptop prices will become so tempting that I’ll give in. But as you said, Lisa, it’s nice to have desktops as backups in the house.

And the battery problem with laptops is an issue that the manufacturers need to address. It IS a problem trying to get new batteries for older laptops.

  5. Love my laptop…love it…love it…My first was an impulse purchase. My 2nd because the 1st wasn’t good enough (you get what you pay for) but the convenience is unmatched. I rarely touch the desktop at home anymore. I’ve really liked being able to take all my technology with me when I travel!
